Soil is
the layer of loose, brownish material that overs the world’s land surfaces wherever
it is moist or warm enough. The only places there is not much soil are polar regions,
mountains, deserts and the hearts of cities.
It is easy to think of soil as just
dirt, but it is much more than that. Without soil, we would have no plants, crops
or food. Soil is also one of the richest of all wildlife habitats. Insects,
worms and other creatures that live in soil are mostly tiny and hidden out of
sight.
Soil is a surprisingly composed of various materials.
About half the soil is solid tiny fragments or grains of rock, created as the
rock below the soil is broken up by the weather. The rest is organic matter, the
decayed remains of dead/plants and animals. Then,
the rest of. the
soil is air and water. These fill the gaps between the solid matter.
